Our Best Kept Secret

Talk about being a closet writer, this is one of those I wrote and jammed in the jungle of mixed ambiguities. Though it may sound late, stale, spongy, mushy, or moldy; I just thought it will not do me harm to repost this for sharing. Sometimes there are memories that will just pop up without expecting them to turn up. Especially with one that you scribbled, crumpled or simply put away without remembering where and accidentally found it at random.

I recall I have posted this in Gather where my participation is no longer active.

To keep your secret is wisdom; but to expect others to keep it is folly.~Samuel Johnson

Here's the story:

When my younger sister and I were in our teens, there was a town fair in our area. Our mother told us not to go out in the night as it was not safe for us.

Contrary to her instruction, nobody was at home including our mother, one particular night. It was cold and raining and soon it stopped.

This sister of mine persuaded me to go out for a Ferris Wheel ride. Since I was kind of "yes" type sister and not one who is hard to talk to, I relented even if I knew we would get into trouble. The onus would be more on me being older and responsible than her. So away we went.

While we were enjoying the beautiful view from atop as the wheels kept turning round and round and round in circle, my mind was at home picturing our worried and possibly angry mother. I really was worried sick thinking about what's going to happen when we got home. And...and...and... suddenly... we heard gun shots. Bang! bang! bang!

...My sister and I were still on top when we saw this man on the ground running amok, shooting randomly with his gun nearby the operator. My sister panicked and immediately she wanted to jump out. I told her not to do anything silly. But she was really scared to death and was trembling.

About two meters from the ground, she slipped away from my tight grip and jumped out. The operator yelled out to her but it was too late. Thankfully, the madman did not aim his gun on her. Timely, the Police came to nab him away from the fair. I felt so relieved to see my sister okay. We slipped quietly to our bedroom when we got home.

That incident never got to the ears of my parents. If they did, I won't be here today to post this blog.

My sister survived though. She didn't dare to complain the hurt she sustained from jumping out high from the Ferris Wheel. Aren’t we good secret keepers? lol

  2. That was a joy ride gone bad, but a good lesson for the young. We all do foolish things when we're young, our mine hasn't developed enough fear of the unknown.
Nice story Bonnie, I bet your sister didn't ask you to sneak out again:)

  5. What a story. How very frightening. Tales like that take all the fun out of being adventurous. Bet there were some serious lessons learned that night.

  6. Thanks for your much appreciated comments Susan and Ma'am Patti. No Susan, my sister hasn't read this. She has no computer at home. She lives in my country of origin.

Yes, far too many lessons to learn from here. I know am giggling, but that's just a nervous giggle turn to laughter. It's not funny for what I experienced with her.

  10. oh my God. ~~~~now then did that thought occur to you while raising two beautiful daughters yourself? i guess we do have secrets from our parents (as they do from us), and i am sure my boys at this tender age already have some!

  11. oh my girls are good secret keepers too. but then they really cannot afford to keep it long to themselves so most of the time, they share their thoughts with me. they must be conscientious. after all, we three are close and we communicate with each other. not much when they were in their early teens.
